the connection.  i took out the connector from a broken portable radio.  it's a piece of plastic with two metal tabs.  one tab contacts the tip of the headphone jack.  the other touches the base.  the middle bit of the headphone jack isn't touched even though it looks electrically isolated.  anyone can feel free to explain that.
