Leafnode+ Page
about two years ago i first used leafnode to read usenet news. since i
no longer had a high speed method of net access, i knew i wanted something
that would download the articles in batches. initially i was going to use
inn, but it would take a fair bit of work to cajole inn to only grab the
newsgroups i wanted. then i found leafnode. essentially you set it up
and point your newsreader at it. initially every newsgroup has a single
"article" - in reality just a pseudo-article generated by leafnode.
by reading it leafnode knows to go grab that newsgroup the next time
it connects (actually fetchnews gets the news, leafnode acts like a
newsserver, and texpire removes old articles).
coming back to leafnode two years on i find that it has forked which is
too bad. leafnode+
seems to fit the features i need more so then the other leafnode project. however it
does look like they'll merge back which is nice.
in the meantime i've built redhat 6.x binaries for leafnode+. i've
modified it a bit. /etc/leafnode.conf is where the config file for
leafnode+ lives; /usr/lib/leafnode still has the group info file and other
stuff, but eventually i'll try to move that - packages shouldn't interfere
with the ability to mount /usr read-only. the bins are in /usr/sbin.
texpire runs daily via /etc/cron.daily and leafnode is configured
to run from inetd. so the list:
the packages are signed with my key which can be found on most key servers
or from right here.
